Lee Myung-bak sweeps to victory in S Korea

Conservative candidate Lee Myung-bak was elected president of South Korea in a sweeping victory on Wednesday, winning almost half of all votes despite allegations of financial impropriety.

Although voter turnout was low, the huge margin will give Mr Lee a strong mandate to overhaul Asia’s third largest economy and will position his centre-right Grand National party to perform well in national assembly elections in April.
