NHS deficit worse than expected despite record investment levels

The National Health Service recorded a worse than expected deficit in England last year, final audited accounts to be published today will reveal.

Although the overall deficit is tiny compared with total spending - about 0.4 per cent of the £69bn spent last year - the final figure of about £250m is well above the Department of Health department's estimate in June that the overspend would be only £140m.
