Severn Trent on Tuesday said it would plead guilty to two of three charges brought against it by the Serious Fraud Office and also said that Ofwat, the water regulator, wanted to fine its water subsidiary £35.8m for overcharging customers.

Both investigations have hung over Severn Trent in recent years and the company said it was a coincidence that the announcements came on the same day.
