Ericsson is to close a research and development centre in Coventry with the loss of 700 jobs, delivering a blow to the weakened economy of the West Midlands city, writes Jonathan Guthrie .

The Swedish telecoms group said the facility, which included a global service delivery unit, would shut down by the middle of next year as part of cost cutting.
