ILO conventions do not assure labour standards

From Mr Thomas Niles.

Sir, Guy Standing of the International Labour Organisation totally misses the point on relative economic security in the US ("Labour body laments lack of economic security", September 2). There is absolutely no demonstrated correlation between ratification of ILO conventions and labour security. Many of the most egregious cases of violation of core labour standards occur in countries that have ratified all of the relevant ILO conventions. The United States has more than 120 labour and employment laws that protect workers in the workplace, more than 70 of which were enacted after 1970. We also have a time-tested system to ensure the enforcement of those laws and correct violations.
