Eurosceptic voted back as Czech president

Václav Klaus, the Czech Republic’s eurosceptic president, was re-elected for a second five-year term on Friday after a tense, drawn-out and closely-fought process.

Six rounds of voting over three days by members of the two houses of parliament ended in Mr Klaus being elected by a single vote more than the required majority. One week earlier the election had ended in deadlock with incumbent Mr Klaus, 66, failing by a single vote to secure the required majority in both houses of parliament over his opponent, the Czech-American economist Jan Svejnar, 55.
