Japan revives fingerprinting of foreigners

Fingerprinting has long been an emotionally charged issue in Japan. For decades, ethnic Korean and Chinese residents – many of whom have lived in Japan for generations – were fingerprinted alongside foreign residents and criminals.

After a protracted battle, the practice of fingerprinting foreign migrants was abandoned in 2000, with the justice ministry saying it could be construed as a violation of human rights.
