Analysis: Figures indicate a broader range of deals

The current boom in takeovers invites inevitable comparisons with the peak of the previous cycle in 2000. As the records tumble, many observers are increasingly nervous that the upswing will be followed by a similarly painful downturn.

Yet an analysis of the factors that contributed to the record levels of mergers and acquisition activity in 2006 shows this cycle is different in several important ways.
