Sir, Bravo to Matthew Engel (“Control freaks”, FT Magazine, November 24/25) for daring to query the received wisdom in political circles that we have to further build a fortress around the UK. We are always preaching to the Europeans how they should be outward-looking like us inimitable Britons – but just try to get into the UK via Gatwick on an ordinary Thursday afternoon. Even for Britons entering their own country it takes 40 minutes.
