Services gloom hits sterling

Sterling suffered on Wednesday after a survey suggested the UK services sector had contracted in May for the first time in five years.

Figures showed the UK services purchasing managers’ index fell from 50.4 in April to 49.8 in May. This was weaker than expected and below the threshold of 50 which indicates growth has stalled.
