S Korea faces another 1997, warns minister

South Korea is now experiencing the same problems that accompanied the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the top economic policy maker warned on Tuesday, delivering the gravest official prognosis yet about the economic challenges.

But Kang Man-soo, the finance minister, vowed to press ahead with the privatisation of state-invested companies such as Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, despite the turmoil.
