Sumitomo Trust, Chuo Mitsui in merger talks

Sumitomo Trust & Banking and Chuo Mitsui Trust said on Friday that they were in merger talks to create Japan’s largest trust bank by assets.

The deal highlights the growing pressure on smaller Japanese financial institutions to merge, given a stagnant domestic market and the growing competitive threat from the three megabanks – Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Mizuho, and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group.
