Liu Chuanzhi, chairman of Lenovo, the Chinese computer company, clearly recalls his early tentative dealings with International Business Machines, the mighty US technology group, in 1985.

Mr Liu and a small group of researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences had only the year before "plunged into the sea" of business and wanted to sell new-fangled foreign personal computers in the Chinese market.
