Overview: Positive news from banks spurs equities

A good day for global equities faltered late in New York on Monday as US investors spurned further good news from the banking sector and a broadly positive outcome to a weekend meeting of Group of 20 finance ministers.

Barclays offered a boost to banking stocks after it said that it had made a strong start to 2009 – echoing comments from leading US banks last week – and was in talks to sell part of its fund management division.
