Manufacturing still in decline, data show

Manufacturing sector activity continued to contract sharply in January and employers cut jobs at record pace, data published on Monday showed.

The monthly purchasing managers’ index for the sector rose to a level of 35.8 last month, from 34.9 in December, where any reading below 50 signals a decline in activity. It was the second improvement in the survey in a row and better than economists’ expectations.
