Angela Merkel is certainly keen to get to know the new man in the Kremlin. If all goes to plan, the German chancellor will fly off to Moscow on Saturday for a quick tete a tete with Dmitry Medvedev, the newly elected president.

Maybe Merkel – who rarely pulled her punches with Vladimir Putin, the outgoing Kremlin chief – wants to get off to a better start with his protégé.
