Growing pains in the US sun belt

The FT’s James Politi reports from Arizona, where the mortgage crisis is threatening the growth of small towns, as we conclude our series on the impact of the halting US economy.

In Queen Creek, the local government slashed $5m in spending after cash flow from construction taxes dried up when the housing bubble burst. The town now faces layoffs, foreclosures and cuts to a planned equestrian park.
