Schröder to urge economic rethink for Europe

Gerhard Schrö der, Germany's chancellor, will tonight call for a retreat from Europe's goal of overtaking the US as the world's most competitive economy by 2010.

Mr Schröder thought the target, set at the European Union's Lisbon summit in 2000, was "no longer realistic", German officials said yesterday.
