Iraq forces talks reach ‘dead end’

Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, said on Friday that initial negotiations with the US on a bilateral status-of-forces agreement had reached a “dead end” because US proposals impinged on Iraqi sovereignty.

Mr Maliki’s first detailed comments on the treaty that will govern the long-term presence of US troops, replacing the existing United Nations mandate, underlined the pressure on his government not to give in to US demands.
