Merkel lays out tight EU treaty timetable

Angela Merkel, German chancellor, on Sunday used the European Union’s 50th anniversary celebrations to warn its leaders to sort out their constitutional wrangling by Christmas, or risk making an “historic error”.

Ms Merkel's tight timetable to rescue elements of the stalled EU constitutional treaty irritated the Czech Republic and Poland and will be a early headache for new leaders in Britain and France.
