China imprisons academic for ‘subversion’

A Chinese academic who launched a campaign for multiparty democracy has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for the “subversion of state power”, a human rights group said on Saturday.

Guo Quan, a former professor at Nanjing Normal University and a former judge who founded a political party two years ago, was sentenced on Friday at a court in the eastern province of Jiangsu, Human Rights in China said in a statement.
