Taiwan bristles at offer of pandas

China yesterday said it wanted to give a pair of pandas to the people of Taiwan, but tempered the goodwill gesture with renewed insistence that the Taipei government accept tough political conditions before any resumption of official contacts.

Taiwan countered with an abrupt dismissal of Beijing's terms for talks and a sarcastically phrased invitation to Hu Jintao, Chinese president, to visit the island to find out what its people "really want".
