Mozilo to hand back $37.5m

Under heavy pressure from politicians in Washington, Angelo Mozilo, chief executive of Countrywide Financial, has agreed to give up $37.5m in severance payments and other benefits.

Mr Mozilo, who built Countrywide into the largest US mortgage lender then saw it crushed by the subprime crisis, was due to receive the payments following the acquisition of Countrywide by Bank of America.
