Economic outlook preys on investor sentiment

US equities rebounded in late trade from sharp losses yesterday, while credit spreads on both sides of the Atlantic were near or at record levels as investors continued to fret about the global economic outlook.

Evidence of weakening economic activity took centre stage as official US and UK data showed inflationary pressures falling rapidly. There were doubts, too, over the direction of talks on aid for General Motors.
