Influence of ratings agencies questioned

AIG’s crisis was exacerbated by a wave of credit ratings cuts late on Monday, raising renewed questions about the influence of ratings agencies in the financial markets.

Regulators have targeted the agencies for their role in assigning top ratings on billions of dollars of securities backed by mortgages that were subsequently given junk ratings.
