ABI to warn on protection for depositors

The insurance industry is to warn the government that any extra increase in depositor protection for bank and building society accounts could damage the wider savings and investment market and cause consumers to put too much of their cash into deposit accounts.

The warning will be made by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) next week in response to a tripartite consultation paper on banking reform by the Treasury, Bank of England and Financial Services Authority.
