Factory gate inflation at 16-year high

Factory gate inflation in the UK rose to a 16-year high in January, illustrating the acute price pressures that could prevent the Bank of England cutting interest rates as much as investors hope over the coming year.

The Office for National Statistics said output prices rose 1 per cent on the month, more than double the increase analysts expected, taking the annual inflation rate to 5.7 per cent, the highest since July 1991.
