Brown’s support hardens despite furore

Support for Gordon Brown among Labour MPs, trade unionists and the party’s rank and file has intensified in the run-up to the conference despite accusations he orchestrated attempts to force Tony Blair to quit.

Ahead of what will be one of the most important speeches of Mr Brown’s political career today, the chancellor’s allies are confident he has the backing of more than half the parliamentary Labour party for next year’s probable leadership contest.
