Airlines cut costs amid fuel surge

Three US airlines unveiled a series of cost-cutting measures on Tuesday, from shedding capacity and jobs to retiring older aircraft and deferring orders for new ones.

The moves are an effort to confront a surge in fuel prices that threatens to force even some of the nation’s largest carriers to seek bankruptcy protection.
