Rock rescuers risk ire of shareholders

Most companies that are on the receiving end of more than half a dozen takeover bids would normally pick the offer that places the highest value on its shares.

However, as Northern Rock’s board and its financial advisers sift through the proposals that have been submitted to the stricken mortgage lender, it will be abundantly clear that shareholders come a long way down the pecking order.
