Sony said on Monday it would focus on producing flat panel TVs using liquid crystal display panels rather than plasma display panels, highlighting a growing divergence among Japan's TV manufacturers in their choice of technology.

Sony, one of the world's largest TV makers, said it would concentrate on LCD TVs as well as rear-projection TVs, which generally have screens larger than 50 inches and are popular in the US. But the group, which is also a major supplier of PDP TVs, denied it would pull out of that market altogether. ?Our strategy is to provide a complete line-up. We will continue to manufacture and sell PDP TVs,? Sony said on Monday in a statement.
