Vodafone bucked the trend as the FTSE 100 marked the 80th anniversary of the Wall Street crash with its worst one-day percentage fall since the start of July.

Shares in the mobile phone group edged 0.3 per cent higher to 138¼p after Bernstein Research said telecoms investors looking for a transformational story should look at Vodafone.
