Brussels in ratings agency clampdown

Europe will introduce the toughest regulatory standards for credit rating agencies under proposals unveiled by Brussels on Wednesday.

The new rules – which are part of the regulatory response to the financial turmoil and will need the backing of the European Parliament and member states – could come into effect within 12 months.
