Peter Elam Håkansson had a simple test of financial strength when he started visiting eastern European companies in the 1990s: was the heating turned on?

The founder of East Capital, one of the biggest eastern European fund managers, says the temperature of a company’s headquarters during winter was a reliable indicator of free cash flow. “If you walked into a meeting room and it was freezing cold you knew they couldn’t pay the heating bills,” he recalls.
