Modern dilemma for world’s oldest bank

Monte dei Paschi di Siena may be the world’s oldest bank but it now finds itself grappling with some very modern issues also facing younger rivals.

MPS, which was founded in 1472 and is now Italy’s third-biggest retail bank, has been seen as one of the country’s weaker lenders and is seeking €1.9bn ($2.6bn) from the government, the first time it has sought such aid.
