HSBC defends stake in Bao Viet

HSBC, Europe’s biggest bank, on Friday defended its $254m purchase of a minority stake in Vietnam’s leading insurer against criticism from activist investor Eric Knight.

Clive Bannister, a senior executive in charge of HSBC’s insurance unit, said the investment – a 10 per cent stake in state-owned Bao Viet – was “an opportunity that we’d never have left alone”.
