New curbs on money markets

Fresh rules to govern money market funds were introduced by the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday to prevent the runs on funds that took place during the financial crisis.

Mary Schapiro, chairman of the SEC, said in a statement at Wednesday’s hearing in Washington that the rules “will help reduce risks associated with money market funds, so that investor assets are better protected and money market funds can better withstand market crises”.
