US image problem deters foreign students

The growing perception among students and researchers that the US has become unwelcoming has contributed to the first decline in international student enrolment at American universities since the early 1970s.

The figures, to be released on Wednesday, show that international student enrolment fell 2.4 per cent in the 2003-2004 academic year, according to the Institute of International Education.
