Doubt cast on Tories’ red tape stance

Red tape from Brussels accounted for only 0.1 per cent of the regulatory costs imposed on business in 2007-08, according to new analysis on Tuesday that appears to undermine one of the central tenets of the Tories’ European elections campaign.

The European Union has long been a prime target for corporate and tabloid red tape campaigns, with Brussels portrayed as a factory for unnecessary and excessive regulation.
