German visa loopholes 'exploited by gangs'

Criminal gangs used German embassies in eastern Europe as gateways for people-smuggling operations across western Europe, police experts told a parliamentary inquiry in Berlin yesterday.

Gangs exploited loopholes in Germany's visa rules between 2000 and 2003 to obtain tourist visas for illegal migrants, including temporary workers and prostitutes, Lars Rückheim, a senior commissioner with the BKA federal criminal police, told the inquiry.
