City minister Lord Myners' criticisms of passive institutional investors at banks were taken to task at a debate hosted by the FT in partnership with the London Stock Exchange on Thursday.

David Paterson , head of corporate governance at the National Association of Pension Funds, defended shareholders, saying Lord Myners was blaming investors on events over which they had little control.
