Brussels verdict sets precedent for rivals

Executives at ING could have been forgiven for thinking of the financial crisis as a distant, unpleasant episode it had weathered 12 months ago before a return to business as usual once conditions improved.

But the European Commission had not forgotten that the Dutch bancassurance group had benefited from a large injection of government funds, and Brussels’ hand was very much behind Monday’s announcement of the break-up of ING.
