MPs bemoan lack of debate over embryo bill

MPs voted in favour of a contentious bill on embryo research on Wednesday night after campaigners on both sides of the abortion debate criticised the government for blocking attempts to change key legislation on the issue.

Under a tightly timetabled government motion voted through earlier in the day, MPs had only 3½ hours to debate a raft of amendments to the human fertilisation and embryonic bill.
