Britain breaks EU deadlock on Cyprus to ease path towards Turkey membership talks

Britain last night cleared part of the way to beginning European Union membership talks with Turkey on October 3 when it ended an EU deadlock on issuing a declaration on Turkey's relationship with Cyprus, writes Daniel Dombey in Brussels.

EU ambassadors have spent this month trying to agree a common line in response to a statement by Turkey in July that it had no immediate intention of establishing diplomatic relations with the internationally recognised Greek Cypriot government.
