Small margin of victory set to restrict Prodi agenda

Last Thursday Silvio Berlusconi, Italy's centre-right prime minister, predicted that if he lost the election to Romano Prodi, his centre-left challenger, it would be "by an absolutely hairline margin of defeat".

It was an uncannily accurate forecast. Mr Prodi's forces just edged out their opponents in the race for parliament's lower house by 49.8 to 49.73 per cent.
