Pioneers herald push into electronic broking

Michael Spencer, chief executive of Icap, has summarised his reasons for shifting into online inter-dealer broking as follows: “I don’t have to pay bonuses to [computer] servers.”

As head of the world’s biggest inter-dealer broker, Mr Spencer is pioneering the push into creating an electronic business. Icap conducts about a third of its business electronically and is aiming for half.
