José Sócrates hopes Portugal’s European Union presidency will culminate in the signing of the “Lisbon Treaty”.
The Socialist prime minister’s first concern is to broker an agreement on the final text of the EU’s new constitutional agreement – to replace the defunct constitution – to be signed in December as, Portugal hopes, the Lisbon Treaty. His second priority is to prepare a relaunch of the ailing Lisbon Agenda, unveiled to great acclaim during Portugal’s previous EU presidency in 2000.
