SEC closed Madoff ‘fishing expedition’

The US Securities and Exchange Commission closed its investigation into Bernard Madoff, calling it a “fishing expedition,” even as its own officials expressed deep concern about the former broker’s business and honesty, according to a scathing report by the agency’s internal watchdog.

That is one of numerous details contained in a 477-page report released late on Friday, which detailed how the SEC failed to stop one of the world’s biggest investment frauds.
