Washington and London differ over windfall tax

Faced with energy companies reaping billions of dollars in profits while consumers struggle to pay high heating bills and petrol costs, the US and UK are taking different views on whether to pass a tax on windfall profits.

Both countries have recently weighed the potential gain in revenues with the risk of losing investment in their oil fields, many of which were first tapped in the 1970s and are now slowly becoming less productive and profitable.
