Ringtones trade up to platinum status

Mobile phone ringtones stepped into the limelight yesterday as the music industry for the first time recognised such recordings with the same gold and platinum designations it has bestowed on top-selling albums for 47 years.

Artists including Bow Wow and Dem Franchize Boyz collected their glittery plaques at a Manhattan ceremony where the star was the new market, expected to contribute more than $600m in sales for the record industry this year.
